First we will look at the exact promise of the new covenant, given in Jeremiah and Hebrews. "Behold, days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them, declares the Lord. But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord, I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. They will not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, Know the Lord, for they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, declares the Lord, for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more. Thus says the Lord, Who gives the sun for light by day and the fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar; The Lord of hosts is His name: If this fixed order departs From before Me, declares the Lord, Then the offspring of Israel also will cease From being a nation before Me forever. Thus says the Lord, If the heavens above can be measured And the foundation of the earth searched out below, Then I will also cast off the offspring of Israel For all that they have done, declares the Lord." (Jeremiah 31:31-37)
"For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion sought for a second. For finding fault with them, He says, Behold, days are coming, says the Lord, When I will effect a new covenant With the house of Israel and with the house of Judah; Not like the covenant which I made with their fathers On the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; for they did not continue in My covenant, and I did not care for them, says the Lord. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel. After those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws into their heart, and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. And they shall not teach everyone his fellow citizen, for all will know Me, from the least to the greatest of them. For I will be merciful to their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more. When He said, a new covenant, He has made the first obsolete. But whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear." (Hebrews 8:7-13)
Now we will go through all the covenants God made within the Old Testament. The covenant we are looking for is coming out of Egypt. First we see in Genesis 1:26-30 also Genesis 2:16-17; on the Edenic covenant. Man was given dominion over the earth, and told to subdue it, be fruitful and multiply. We know this is not the covenant we are looking for.
Next we have the Adamic covenant in Genesis Chapter 3; here we have curses for sinning handed out. Also first promise of a redeemer, from the seed of the woman given. We know this is not the covenant we are looking for.
Next we have Noahic covenant in Genesis 6:18; also Genesis 9: 9-17; God promises never again to destroy all life by a flood, and we have a renewal of the command to be fruitful and multiply. In this covenant God commands man to carry out the death penalty for murder and permits the eating of meat. Sealed by the sign of the rainbow. Again we know this is not the covenant we want.
Was Noah a Gentile or a Jew? We know he was a Gentile until Abraham, Isaac and Jacob there was no Israel or Judah. Look at Genesis 7:2; God tells Noah to take every clean animal by sevens, a male and his female. Animals that are not clean two, a male and his female. In Genesis 8:20-21; Noah built an alter to the Lord, and offered a burnt offering on the alter of clean animals only. I believe Noah as a Gentile understood the sacrifice of animals as well as the clean and unclean animals. When you follow scripture through Adam, Noah and then Abraham. You see the clean and unclean animals, the sacrifice of clean animales on the Lord's alter. Long before there was a nation of Israel or Judah. God has always given covenants and commandments makes no difference if you are Jewish are Gentile.
Next we have the Abrahamic covenant in Genesis chapter 15; God promises to give the Promised Land to Abraham through his natural seed. (We know this natural seed is Isaac) We are told his seed will number as the stars in the sky. Sealed by the sign of circumcision in Genesis chapter 17 and renewed through Isaac and Jacob. Not subject to being broken by Israel's disobedience to the Torah (Laws). To help us understand what we are looking for in the covenants we will look at Galatians 3:17;"What I am saying is this: the Law, which came four hundred and thirty years later, does not invalidate a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to nullify the promise." This covenant did not come about when God led His people out of Egypt. Actually this is the opposite, since the covenant prophecies the 400 years in Egypt.
Next we have the Mosaic covenant in Exodus 24:1-8; The people of Israel, upon hearing God's commandments, say yes, we will obey every word the Lord has spoken-in other words, to keep the laws (Torah). This included curses for disobediance, and blessings for obedience. Verse 8;"So Moses took the blood and sprinkled it on the people and said, Behold the blood of the covenant which the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words." What did Jesus do? He sealed the new covenant with His Blood! This is the only covenant which came in conjunction with the liberation of Israel from Egypt. It is the only covenant in which anyone, but God promised to do anything! Therefore, it is the only one subject to be broken by the people of Israel. This covenant, and no other, is the sugject of Hebrews 8. We will still continue on to the next three covenants.
Next we have the Levitical covenant in Numbers Chapter 25; As a reward for his zeal, God promises Phinehas that the Levitical priesthood belongs to him and his decendents forever. In Jeremiah 33:14-22; which links it to the Davidic covenant. While it could be said this promise is linked to the salvation of Israel from Egypt, it took place nearly 40 years later. We know Phinehas made no promises, so this covenant is not to be broken on his end.
Next we have the Davidic covenant in 2 Samuel Chapter 7; God promises that David will never lack a man to sit on his throne, that is, the throne of Israel. The Davidic covenant is a everlasting covenant Yeshua will set on the throne of David as King. "Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will fulfill the good word which I have spoken concerning the house of Israel and the house Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch of David to spring forth; and He shall execute justice and righteousness on the earth. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will dwell in safety; and this is the name by which she will be called: the Lord is our righteousness. For thus says the Lord, David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel; and the Levitical priests shall never lack a man before Me to offer burnt offerings, to burn grain offerings and prepare sacrifices continually. This word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying, Thus says the Lord, If you can break My covenant for the day and My covenant for the night, so that day and night will not be at their appinted time, then My covenant may also be broken with David My servent so that he will not have a son to reign on his throne, and with the Levitical priests, My ministers. As the host of heaven cannot be counted and the sand of the sea cannot be measured, So I will mulitiply the decendents of David My servent and the Levites who ministering to Me." Jeremiah 33:14-22)
The New Covenant, was fulfilled by Yeshua during His last Passover meal. What did Yeshua say? He only came to His own, the nation of Israel (Matthew 10:5-6). Therefore God has just told us He will not reject Israel. I think we can all agree on that! To say othewise would call God a liar! "He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end." (Luke 1:32-33) Hebrews 10:16;"This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws upon their heart , and on their mind I will write them, He then says, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more." (Hebrews 10:16-17)
As I watch and listen to what is taking place in America today. I listen to those who say they are Christians, yet they talk and live as the unbelievers around them. Where is our fear of God today? Paul had a fear of God. "Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilment of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God" ( 2 Corinthians 7:1).
Since we have a therefore we need to look at (2 Corinthians 6:14-18). Other wise we will not have a full understanding of what Paul has said. "Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever? Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said, I will dwell in them and walk among them; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. Therefore, come out from their midst and be separate, says the Lord. And do not touch what is unclean; and I will welcome you. And I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to Me, says the Lord Almighty". Jesus tells us; do not fear those who will kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell" (Matthew 10:28).
Without faith and works we cannot stand firm in what we believe within the Word of God. "Jesus said to him, because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed" (John 20:29). Thomas could not believe until he had seen Jesus. Without faith it is impossible to please God. "By faith, Noah being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith. By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going. (Hebrews 11:7:8).
"But someone may well say, You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that God is one. you do well, the demons also believe, and shudder. But are you willing to reconize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up Isaac his son on the alter? You see that faith was working with his works, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected; and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, and Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness, and he was called the friend of God. You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone. In the same way, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead" (James 2:18-26).
"Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimoney of two or three witnesses. How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know Him who said, Vengance is Mine, I will repay. And again, the Lord will judge His people. It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God" (Hebrews 10:28-31).
Some Christians believe that grace was given by Jesus. in the New Testament. Since most Christians do not read the Old Testament. They do not understand God has always given grace and mercy to His people. "See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled." (Hebrews 12:15). "But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble" (James 4:6). Grace is not a card for you to live in the world as unbelievers and say everything is good. When God's Word tells us certain things are wrong or evil. That is when we must stand on God's Word only. When we stand against God we are in trouble and will face judgement.
"Thus says the Lord, the people who survived the sword found grace in the wilderness-Israel, when it went to find rest." (Jeremiah 31:2) "For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord gives grace and glory, No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly" (Psalm 84:11). Israel was judged for their sins and only a remnant was saved by grace (Ezra 9:8). "The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all." (2 Corinthians 13:14) Please read Luke 2:40; John 1:14, Romans 6:14-15: I want to make sure you understand what I have said here.
In our feel good religion of today we have taken our eyes away from the blood of Jesus. We now have set our eyes on the cross and not the blood. Did the cross die for your sins? Jesus said at His last supper; "for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins." (Matthew 26:28). If Jesus would have died with a hangman's noose around His neck? Would you run out and buy a hangman's noose and worship it? It was not what He died on that saved us, only His blood will save us from our sins. "For it was the Father's good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, wheather things on earth or things in heaven" (Colossians 1:19-20). So the next time you see the cross, think of Jesus how He suffered and shed His blood for you. Instead of bowing down and worshiping the cross, look to Him for your salvation.
Understand this the new covenant was given to Judah and Israel first. Then to the nations, we as Gentiles, share in all the promises that God made with Abraham. And we have many beautiful promises given to us by God. As Christians we should rejoice for all that Israel has given us. Without Yeshua, and the nation of Israel, we would not have these promises and blessings. If our God could not keep His covenants and promises that He has made to His people Israel. How could we as Gentiles's trust and feel safe in our faith? When God makes a covenant and He says it cannot be broken. When God makes a promise He will not break this promise. This is my God and I stand on His word. May He receive all the praise and glory.
